Kiltegan Sunken Garden

Co. Wicklow

Complementing the Foothills of the Wicklow Mountains

This clients’ unique log cabin style home in the foothills of the Wicklow mountains had no plan or gardens at the back of the house...only a few trees and a hole in the ground where they thought they would make a lake 16years ago. It was in direct view line from the living/dining room and they wanted me to do something with the hole in the ground.

A Riot of Color &
a Sunken Garden

My full garden makeover included adding a wildflower meadow, creating a brilliantly colored backdrop, full of movement and pollinators.  Complementing the meadow, I incorporated a slightly elevated bird bath that attracts a variety of delightful birdlife.

What was once the ‘hole in the ground’ has been transformed into a vibrant perennial border of geums, hemerocallis, heathers, alliums, tree peonies and sedums. The border encloses a secluded sitting area protected from the prevailing winds. Carpeted with thyme plants, and surrounded by masses of scented lavender at eye level, the peaceful sitting area is an oasis from which to admire the rolling landscape.

The view from the house has been transformed into a riot of color and wildlife, creating a garden full of interest and activity all year round.

We can’t recommend Valerie enough!

We had a hole in the ground for 15 years which we called the Sunken Garden, and Valerie came and imagined something far greater and more wonderful than anything we could have designed ourselves. It has become a space where we can relax and enjoy a meal with friends and family, in surroundings conducive to intimate conversation.

Valerie listened attentively to our thoughts, including that it should be low maintenance.... It has been a pleasure to work with her, and we cannot recommend her enough!”
